In many areas of Africa, revolutionary groups have taken over some of the diamond mines using proceeds to finance their illegal operations. These diamonds are referred to as conflict diamonds or blood diamonds. The United Nations instituted a system of controlling diamonds that were taken from these groups by insisting that all of the legal diamonds must be accompanied by a certificate of sale as they moved through the system but the system has not worked well. Today, these blood diamonds total less than 2% of the overall market share.
You will be amazed to know that he is not the only male royal without a wedding band. Other than him, his grandfather, Prince Philip who has been married to the queen for 69 years, also doesn’t wear a ring and if you see photo timeline of their marriage, you will notice that he hasn’t for many years. Surprised? Well, don’t be, because men did not wear rings earlier, it was only during World War II that they started wearing rings as a reminder of their family back at home, while they were away fighting for their respective countries. It’s the women who have been wearing rings since the Egyptian times.
Engagement rings are purchased when a man chooses to tell that special someone that he is ready to bind their life together and gets a ring to symbolize and seal his affection. Traditionally a ring for engagement consists of a prominent center stone studded in a yellow or white gold band. Sometimes there are smaller stones to grace the big one in a certain kind of pattern. Mostly the first choice for a wedding ring is a diamond but these days rubies, emeralds, sapphires and tanzanite are also being used. The center stone mostly has the maximum prominence in the ring and is the crowning glory; it may be a single one like a solitaire. A solitaire ring is often the way a woman envisions her engagement ring, that towering rock with all its brilliance is what will surely take her breath away.
Engraving. Engraving allows you to personalize your wedding rings. Messages are engraved on the inner side of the ring. Engraving your names and the date of your wedding is a classic trend that will never grow old. If you are restricted on space, you can only write the initials. Many modern day brides and grooms have gone one step ahead to engrave words with important meanings, quotes and phrases on love, a phrase from a song (our song), nicknames, religious scriptures or symbols of true love.
The Egyptians wore the wedding ring on the left hand because it was believed that a vein in the left hand went straight to the heart. This tradition is still commonly practiced today in most parts of the world largely for practical purposes (most people are right handed.) It is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand. But there are some countries and groups which do not follow this tradition. In the Jewish faith, the wedding ring is put on the index finger. Roman Catholics traditionally wore their wedding band on the right hand, and in many countries and regions in Europe some people still follow this tradition.
